Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of the personal papers of James G. Randall, a professor of history at the University of Illinois. It includes correspondence, articles, reviews, and drawings.

James G. Randall (1881-1953) was a historian and author who specialized in Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War era. He was a professor of history at the University of Illinois from 1920 to 1950. His wife, Ruth Painter Randall (1892-1971), assisted Randall in his research, and later wrote her own books about Mary Todd Lincoln and the Lincoln family.

The collection contains letters to and from James G. Randall, copies of articles and reviews authored by Randall, reviews of Randall's books, articles about him, and two drawings. It also includes offprints given to Randall and his wife, other items they collected, books they annotated, and papers relating to the James G. Randall professorship at the University of Illinois.

The collection came to the Library after James G. and Ruth Painter Randall's deaths. Related materials can be found at the Illinois History and Lincoln Collections in the James G. Randall Collection of Abraham Lincoln source materials (MS 1026), the Ruth Painter Randall Papers (MS 196), and the Emanuel Hertz collection (MS 676). Randall's career is also represented in collections of his papers at the Library of Congress and in the University of Illinois Archives.
