Scope and Contents:
The Tye River, in central Virginia, begins at the base of the Blue Ridge, flows southeast through Nelson County, and enters the James River in Buckingham County, about twenty miles northeast of Lynchburg, Va. According to an 1855 gazetteer, the Tye River Warehouse was a post office in Nelson County.
This collection contains account books of the Warehouse and some other business firms in Virginia which bought tobacco and cotton in exchange for retail and wholesale goods. These records were bought by the Illinois Historical Survey in 1929 from Herbert A. Kellar, manager of the McCormick Historical Association.Collection, placed in the Rare Book Room or the University Archives, and now brought together as one of the Illinois History and Lincoln Collections. Another collection of Tye River Warehouse records (17 vols., 1826-66) in the Wisconsin Historical Society, recipient of the principal McCormick Collection.
