John Boyle wrote this letter from Tremont, Ill. on February 28, 1848 to Representative D. M. Barringer of North Carolina. Boyle's letter is sewn together with handwritten copies of affidavits written on behalf of the heirs of Maj. George Walls. These affidavits claimed that neither Maj. Walls nor his widow or heirs received pay or pensions for his service under George Rogers Clark in the American Revolution. Boyle asked that the affidavits be shown to Henry Clay to have unknown details settled, then sent to a Mr. Fendall.
Wilbur Duncan of Decatur, Ill. donated the letter to the Illinois Historical Survey, predecessor to the Illinois History and Lincoln Collections, in 1957.
