Scope and Contents:
Theodore Vigo Wadskier, born on the island of St. Croix in the Danish West Indies in 1827, was educated in Copenhagen, where he completed a course in Architecture at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. He came to the United States in 1850, practicing his profession in Philadelphia until 1857, and then in Chicago. For twenty years, before and after the Great Fire of 1871, he designed many of the city's churches, business blocks, and residences.
This collection contains a single ink drawing, 15 1/2" x 21 1/2," signed "T. V. Wadskier, Architect, 112 Dearborn Street, Chicago, Ill." It shows the front elevation of a residence as well as details for one of the dormer windows and the main cornice. Found among the drawings of the School of Architecture archives, Wadskier's work was transferred to the Illinois History and Lincoln Collections in 2014. There are brief entries for Wadskier in A. T. Andreas, History of Chicago (1886), 3:69-70, and in Henry F. Withey and Elsie Rathburn Withey, Biographical Dictionary of American Architects (Deceased) (1956) 621.
