Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of one volume of tickets and passes from the 1933-1934 Chicago World's Fair pasted onto 36 pages. The volume was compiled by Ernst Hertzberg & Sons, bookbinders in Chicago.
Ernst Hertzberg was born in 1853 and immigrated to Chicago from Gramzow, Germany when he was about 13. Hertzberg had apprenticed with a bookbinder in Germany at a young age. In 1874, he began working for Ringer and Co. Bindery, in which he later became a partner. One of his most notable bookbinding endeavors is a twelve volume set entitled Sloane's Life of Napoleon Bonaparte in which he inlaid original Napoleonic materials into Sloane's biographical material. Hertzberg died in 1918 and the bindery passed on to his son, Edward Hertzberg.
The collection contains a volume of tickets and passes, many of which are stamped "Specimen." The tickets vary, with some being for entry to the Fair itself and others to the various exhibits around the Fair. Most of the items are dated 1934, the second year of the Century of Progress International Exposition in Chicago.
Ernst Hertzberg & Sons gifted this specially-bound volume to the Library on October 29, 1935.
