Scope and Contents:
The Spitler, Noble & Co. of Mattoon, Ill. compiled this ledger for the Sanborn Co. The ledger illustrates the fire insurance system of the Sanborn Co. It contains hand-drawn maps of miscellaneous properties in 27 Illinois towns as well as notes on policy holders' insurance and mortgage rates. Among the properties depicted in the volume are farm buildings, flour mills, grain elevators, hay presses, private homes, and town halls. The volume includes about 50 pages of data and a dozen tipped-in or loose pages.
Towns represented include Allenville, Altamont, Bethany, Casey, Charleston, Decatur, Effingham, Fairfield, Gays, Humboldt, Irving, Jacksonville, Jewett, Litchfield, Marshall, Mattoon, Montrose, Mt. Pulaski, Neoga, Newton, Oakland, Shelbyville, Stewardson, Strasburg, Taylorville, Tuscola, and Walnut, Ill., and Batesville, Ind. Many of the properties were owned by the Arthur Jordan Company, a regional dealer in eggs and poultry whose headquarters were in Indianapolis.
The University of Illinois Library acquired the volume from the Urbana Free Library in 2004.
