This collection contains a minutes book kept from May 25, 1910, through January 1911 by the Waukegan Hive 84, the women’s branch of a male fraternal lodge in Waukegan, Illinois. Minutes recorded in this book include information from fourteen monthly meetings. Discussed in these meetings were membership attendance (including attendance from visiting members of other hives), financial reports, and the planning of activities. All members of the hive were referred to as “lady” followed by their surname. Activities included visiting sick members, card parties, bakery sales, and joining with other hives and the “Sir Knights” for other activities. The minute book also includes a list of dues or contributions paid by twenty-eight members. The final page of the book includes a list of elected officers.
Biographical/Historical Context:
The Waukegan Hive 84 were a group of over three hundred women who participated in the female branch of an unknown men’s fraternal lodge based in Waukegan, Illinois. A “fraternal lodge” refers to a local branch or unit of a larger fraternal order or organization. The members of Waukegan Hive 84 mostly met at Odd Fellows Hall, with each meeting concluding with a “flower march,” a procession where attendees would place flowers into a basket.
