Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of one photo album produced by the Union Fuel Company in October of 1923. The photographs depict six different mining properties affiliated with the Company.
Union Fuel Co. operated out of the McCormick building on 332 S. Michigan Ave., in Chicago as of 1923. Polk’s Chicago City Directory of 1923 indicates that George F. Goodnow acted as President and W. H. Leland was General Manager. The Union Fuel Co. page on the ILMines Wiki from the Illinois State Geological Survey documents a connection between Union Fuel and five of the six mines depicted in this album.
The photo album in this collection consists of 42 photographs, each with a brief caption attached to the back. These photographs depict the infrastructure of six mines across Illinois (in Nilwood, Keys, Auburn, Athens, Selbytown, and Girard). Such infrastructure included the mine fan houses, tipples, office buildings, and the houses of the miners. Some of the photographs are attributed to E. G. Wade and some are attributed to Harry E. Neef. The captions on the photographs were summarized in a typed list which is included in the album.
