Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of a program from the Eighteenth Annual Session of the Southern Illinois District Association of Colored Women and a letter from Hannah A. Woods to Mrs. Charles J. McGee asking her to prepare a short talk or paper for the session.
Organized in 1918, the Southern Illinois District Association of Colored Women was part of the larger National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs (NACWC). NACWC was established in 1896, merging the National Federation of Afro-American Women and the National League of Colored Women. Hannah A. Woods served as president of the Southern Illinois District Association of Colored Women, the Southern Illinois-based auxiliary for NACWC, from 1935 through 1936.
This collection includes a program from the Eighteenth Annual Session of the Southern Illinois District Association. This session was held on April 26-27, 1935, at Attucks School in Carbondale, Illinois. The program includes a list of past presidents, members of the Program Committee, the schedule for the session, and a list of officers for the 1935 year. The lyrics to “Lift Every Voice and Sing” are printed on the back of the program.
This collection also includes a letter written by the President of the Southern Illinois District Association of Colored Women, Hannah A. Woods, to a Mrs. Charles J. McGee. Woods requested that Mrs. McGee prepare a short talk or paper on “Health and Hygiene,” focused either on the topic in general or specifically on “First Aid.” McGee’s presentation is confirmed in the program.
