Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of a stock certificate that sold ten Woman's Federal Oil Company of America shares to Mrs. E.H. Brockway in 1917.
The Woman's Federal Oil Company of America was established in 1915 by Harriet Benham (Mrs. Harry H.) Honore of Chicago, Illinois, and several other wealthy Chicago women. Honore served as president. In 1918, the company's wells in East Oakland, Illinois, discovered oil and the company paid its first dividends to stockholders. This success was followed by several expensive projects that failed, leading Honore to resign as president in December 1919. The company was dissolved in 1920.
This collection consists of a stock certificate from the Woman’s Federal Oil Company of America. It sold ten shares, at ten dollars apiece, to Mrs. E.H. Brockway on July 2, 1917. The upper left corner is decorated with an image of a woman in a hat, surrounded by the text, "Equal opportunity in the amassing of wealth." Below this image is the Woman's Federal Oil Company of America's gold seal. The certificate was signed by Mrs. H.H. Honore Jr. and Aurelia Treuhaft.
