This collection consists of the account book for the medical practice of Dr. Vaughn B. Corey in Quincy, Illinois, from 1860 to 1870.
Vaughn B. Corey (1826-1884) was born in Yates County, New York, in 1828. He became a shoemaker by trade from ages 18 to 20, after which he began to study medicine. In 1854, Corey moved to Quincy, Illinois, and practiced with Dr. John Parsons. He was a strong supporter of the Union and enlisted in Company C, 118th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, on August 28, 1862. He was the Hospital Steward of his regiment until his promotion to Assistant Surgeon at the Battle of Champion Hills in Mississippi. The regiment mustered out in 1865, and Corey returned to Quincy.
This collection includes a bound book of financial records for Vaughn B. Corey's medical practice. The first entries are from 1860 in Quincy, Illinois. There are very few entries in 1863, during Corey's first year in the Union Army, and none in 1864. The account book resumes entries in October 1865, after the 118th Volunteer Infantry mustered out of service and Corey returned home. Each entry lists the patient's name, the medical service provided by Corey, and the amount charged. Corey practiced in Quincy, West Point, Summer Hill, and Nebo, Illinois. Most visits cost between $1 and $1.50, but further services such as treating broken bones or delivering babies could cost much more. Many of Corey's patients paid their account by produce, meat, and other goods. The last entry in the account book was on March 13, 1870.
