This document is the formal commission appointing Thomas W. Cheyney, a farmer from West Chester, Pennsylvania, as an Assessor of Internal Revenue for the Seventh District of Pennsylvania.
Thomas W. Cheyney was the grandson of Thomas "Squire" Cheyney, a Revolutionary War-era politician and farmer from Chester County, Pennsylvania, who was a member of the convention in Pennsylvania which ratified the United States Constitution. Thomas W. Cheyney inherited his grandfather's farm. He died in 1866.
The commission confirms Thomas W. Cheyney's nomination and appointment as Assessor of Internal Revenue for the Seventh District of Pennsylvania. The commission was signed by Abraham Lincoln and Salmon P. Chase, Secretary of the Treasury, on February 27, 1863.
The commission was donated to the University Library in 2005.
