This note, written on September 22, 1845, indicates a payment made by Abraham Lincoln to Joseph Gundy, a farmer from Danville, Illinois.
Joseph Gundy was a legal client of Abraham Lincoln's in the 1840s and 1850s, and the two developed a congenial relationship. Gundy had given Lincoln a sum of money so that Lincoln could pay his state taxes. After the expenses were paid, Lincoln wrote this note on September 22 to refund the $21.31 that was left over.

The note was donated to the Library in 1960 by Mrs. David E. (Madge Gundy) Bower of Jacksonville, Florida, and Mrs. Clara (Gundy) Young of Danville, Illinois, granddaughters of Joseph Gundy.
