Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection contains transcripts and photocopies of letters and papers written by German settlers in St. Clair Co., Ill. The letters discuss climate, inflation in St. Louis, farming, land prices, and the scarcity of money. Also included are Gottfried Duden's description of his journey to Missouri, a guidebook for German emigrants taken from Das Westland, and Gustav Koerner's review of geographical and political situations concerning the German emigrants.

The original manuscripts in the collection are held by Cornell University.
