Scope and Contents:

An officer in the 7th Ill. Cav., Henry C. Forbes worked as a farmer and teacher after the Civil War. He eventually served as business agent and librarian of the Illinois State Laboratory of Natural History, later called the Illinois Natural History Survey. These papers include a biographical sketch of him by his son, Robert H. Forbes; a photograph of him in military attire and a negative copy; an excerpt of one of his letters; and a short paper by Forbes entitled "Grierson's Raid, An Epic of the Civil War."
