Scope and Contents:
Included in this collection is the "District School Record Book" for the Droit School (primary school), District No. 4, Township No. 1, Range No. 10 and 11 W., St. Clair County, for the years 1872-99. The book compiled printed forms and special ledgers, including forms used to record annual and special school meetings; registers of school officers and terms of office; proceedings of the district board; State of Illinois teacher's contracts; teacher's school report forms; registers of official school visits; and township treasurer's exhibits of district funds. The collection also contains eight photographs of school classes posing in front of the school building, dating from 1891 to 1925. Seven of the photographs are of Droit School classes but one features a class from Jackson School, also in Sugar Loaf Township. In addition, there is a small album which lists the girls and boys at Droit School on Dec. 25, 1897, and autograph books of Emma Doerr (Young), in 1893 and 1898.
Florence Young Barnes, of Champaign, Ill., donated the collection to the Illinois Historical Survey in 1993. She had attended Droit School in the 1920s, and her father, Charles Young, attended the school in the late nineteenth century. The school was built on land owned by the Young family.
