Scope and Contents:
Orin Shepherd Campbell was a practicing physician in Pike County, Ill. This collection contains three volumes of his business records (1836-1839, 1840-1844, and 1853-1857), and also several loose receipts and statements (1860-1865). The account books list the patient, the date of visit, the service rendered, and the fee charged. Of particular note is the third volume, which documents Campbell's partnership with John T. Hodgen, who later became a notable St. Louis surgeon, and who served as President of the American Medical Association and of the American Surgical Association.
With the assistance of Paul F. Grote, Jr., Almarina Grimshaw Grote of Pittsfield, Ill., granddaughter of Dr. Campbell, donated the collection to the Library in 1939.
