Scope and Contents:
Joseph R. Kathrens compiled this scrapbook between 1896 and 1900 when he was Treasurer of the American Society of National Advertisers. It contains portraits, clippings, and cartoons of important figures in the world of journalism, mainly publishers, advertisers, and owners. In a signed typewritten note pasted in the volume Kathrens explains, "We are familiar with the name and form of the principal Newspapers and Magazines, but not quite so well acquainted with the owner, editor, manager, and artist. These personages of more or less importance have been gathered in this volume, in which has been included a number of advertising men of greater or less distinction--- the fellows who make it possible for the editor and the artist to draw pay."
This volume was transferred from the Main Stacks of the Library to the Illinois Historical Survey in 1974.
