Scope and Contents:

Carl Stephens, University Historian, and Charles W. Paape, Research Assistant in History of the University of Illinois, drafted this manuscript, the advisory committee for which included Theodore C. Pease, Fred H. Turner, and Harrison E. Cunningham. The manuscript was submitted to the University Press by the committee but was never published, in part because of a letter on Sept. 13, 1950, from Joseph W. Swain to Frederick C. Dietz, his colleague in the Department of History. Swain provided a detailed critique of the work, which he assumed to be Paape's.

In 1955, Donald Jackson of the University Press deposited this copy of the manuscript in the Illinois Historical Survey. Another copy is in the University Archives (Record Series 26/1/21).
