This collection includes correspondence, records, and miscellaneous printed works collected by Thomas Munroe. Thomas Munroe studied medicine at the University of Maryland and practiced in Jacksonville and Rushville, Illinois for several years.
In his letters to family members, Thomas Munroe describes life as a surgeon during the Civil War. The first letter (March 24, 1864), from Munroe's son, Thomas, Jr., concerns final examinations and newspaper reports about Sherman's forces. The second letter (January 25, 1865), from first assistant surgeon Reuben Woods, discusses medical problems among soldiers in several regiments, among them the 119th Ill. Vol. Infantry, 122nd Ill. Vol. Infantry, 21st Missouri Vol. Infantry, and 89th Indiana Vol. Infantry. Additionally, two letters from Royal R. and Joe E. Hinman, relatives of Munroe's wife, discuss the transfer of land and money into stocks and bonds.
Other items in the collection include a program for the Junior Exhibition at Illinois College in 1882, an invitation for Mr. Munroe to attend the Young Ladies' Athenaeum meeting, and an 1894 document signed by Thomas Munroe, Jr., granting power-of-attorney privileges to his brother, Hinman Munroe for land in Schuyler County, Illinois.
