Adiminsrative/Biographical History:
The Crop Science Staff Newsletter originated as staff memos for the department. In Agronomy Staff Memo, no. 18, there is a call out for suggestions for a ??????¢??catchy??????¢?? new title for the publication.1 Squanto Speaks was decided on and on February, 21, 1966, issue no. 1, the first page is dedicated to the history of Squanto, which at this time was the name of the ??????¢??official Agronomy Department Indian??????¢??2, and why it was chosen as the representative of the Agronomy department.
According to this issue, Tisquantum, also known as Squanto, was a Native American who befriended the pilgrims at Plymouth Rock. He instructed them on agriculture and how to fish, and became their translator and an ambassador for peace to the Native American tribes in the area. It was this legacy that led to the department to this name.
This character was retired in 1989.3
