Inscribed at the top is the motto ON EARTH PEACE GOODWILL TOWARD MEN, and at the bottom DULCE ET DECORUM EST PRO PATRIA MORI ("It is sweet and right to die for your country/fatherland", from the Odes of Roman poet Horace).
