Geoscience Information Society (GIS) Archives contains material concerning the foundation, organization and history of GIS. Correspondence, directories, reports, minutes of meetings, photo albums, copies of the GIS Newsletter (1966-), proceedings, official records relating to the organization's constitution and by-laws, incorporation,awards, official membership records, officers, annual and executive board meetings, history, publications, membership and library directories, research of members and partnership with other professional organizations including the American Geological Institute (AGI), Geological Society of America (GSA), Special Libraries Association (SLA), Council on Library Resources (CLR), American Library Association (ALA), Council on Education in the Geological Sciences (CEGS), and its relation to government offices including the U.S. Geological Sciences (CEGS), the U.S. Geological Survey, the Bureau of Mines. The GIS is concerned with bibliographical problems of geology librarians, subject headings and indexing of geological materials, the job placement and education of scientific librarians. The series includes the files of early organizer and Executive Committee member Ruth A. Bristol (1964-73), GIS presidents Harriet Wallace Smith (1967) and Mark W. Pangborn (1966), GIS representative to the AGI Sara Aull (1971-72), and secretaries Ruth L. Keefer (1973-74), Barbara M. Christy (1975), Mary Scott (1976-77), Elizabeth Behrendt (1977-78), Caryl Shields (1978-80), and Nancy Crossfield (1980-82); Editor of the GIS Newsletter Robert "Skip" McAfee, Jr. (1957-1974); and presidents of GIS (1968, 1976-82, 1987-95, 1998-2000).
