Sepia-toned photograph showing a machine for testing steel under repeated torsion strain, with major parts identified by letters. Specimen "S" is twisted back and forth by the action of the Crank "C" and connecting Rod "R." The twisting is resisted by springs "Q" and "Q," and the amount of compression of the springs measured by a micrometer dial "D." The device was designed and built in the materials science laboratory.
