Sepia-toned photograph showing a sudden loading machine for testing steel, with its major parts identified with letters. The caption notes that the weight "W" is allowed to fall and strike Plate "P." This action transmit force through Rod "R." and tended to pull Specimen "S" into two pieces. The force of the tension is measured by the stretch of the tempered steel rod "T." The testing apparatus was designed and built in the materials science laboratory.
