Russian POWs at Field Kitchens in Riga | University of Illinois Archives
Caption accompanying image reads: All this [services provided by the YMCA center in Riga] has related to prisoners coming out of Russia. The Russians coming back from Germany do not come into our camp, but simply embark in trains in the railroad yards at the end of our street, and go on toward the border. We meet each transport and issue a few cigarettes to each man, and chocolate and milk for women and babies. The transports are fed, but there is no opportunity to get anything to drink on the twelve-hour journey to the border, (and goodness knows what they will find on the other side of the line). So we wheel out a couple of field kitchens and serve hot coffee to all comers. No. 10 shows the line-up: a pail to each box-car and a few stragglers who are coming in for extra helpings."
