Caption on reverse reads: "Armory, headquarters of the Reserve Officers' Training Corp. Since the University opened in 1868 it has requires two years of military training of all men students unless specially exempted. Many pursued it for the full four years. At the time of Pearl Harbor, 500 Illini graduates were immediately available as officers. This training was taken over by the Army ROTC after World War I. In 1945 the Navy ROTC unit was established. In 1949 the Air Force ROTC was added. Branches of the ROTC also are on the University's campus in Chicago. Total ROTC enrollment this year exceeds 4,800. Student may take four years of training and thus earn commissions in the service of their choice."
