Marvin Stippes  was  born  August  8,  1922  in  Chicago,  a  son of  John  and  Ella  Stippes.  He died on Friday,  April  20, 1979  at  Carle  Foundation  Hospital  in  Urbana. He  married  Patricia  Kovatovich  in  1946  in  Seattle,  Washingtion and had one son Dr.  Geoffrey  Stippes.  Professor  Stippes  attended  Morton  Junior  College  and  grad-uated  from  the  University  of  Illinois  in  1943  with  a  bachelor's degree in  education.  He  taught  briefly  at  the  high  school  in Arthur,  Illinois  and  then  went  to  Seattle,  where  he  worked  for Boeing  Aircraft  Company and  earned  a  master's  degree  in  mathe-matics  from  the  University  of  Washington  in  1946.  He  taught at  that  university  and  then  in  the  mathematics  department  of Montana  State  College  at  Bozeman.  He  joined  the  faculty  of  the College  of  Engineering  at  the  University  of  Illinois  in  1949, leaving  later  for  two  years  at  Washington  University in  St. Louis,  and  again  later  for  a  year  at  Virgina  Polytechnic Institute,  where  he  recieved  a  doctor's  degree  in  applied mechanics  in  1957.  He  became  an  assistant  professor  at  the University  of  Illinois  in  1955  and  a  full  professor  in  1959. Later  he  was  a  visiting  professor  at  the  University  of  Wash-ington,  the  University  of  Colorado,  and  the  Georgia  Institute of  Technology.  At  the  time  of  his  death,  he  was  Professor of  Theoretical  and  Applied  Mechanics  and  of  General  Engineering at the University of Illinois. Professor  Stippes  was  an  internationally  recognized authority  on  the  mathematical  theory  of  elasticity.  He  was the  founder  and  editor  of  the  Journal  of  Elasticity  and  the author  of  over  forty  articles  and  books.  Over  thirty  students did  their  doctoral  dissertations  under  his  direct  supervisionSources:
