The College of Education was reorganized on October 17, 1962, and nine former informal divisions and five other administrative units were changed into seven departments of the college, one of which was Elementary Education. Each department was to have an Executive Committee and a chairman.1 Courses in elementary education date from 1912-13 when Course 119, "The Elementary Curriculum," was introduced in the Graduate College.2 The course continued until 1919 when it was listed as "Curriculum Construction."3 The "Elementary Curriculum" was not given in 1919-20 but was offered the following year.4 Supervision of Instruction of Elementary School Subjects was first offered in the summer of 1922.5 In the 1930's "Psychology of Elementary Subjects"6 and "Trends in Elementary Education" appeared in the catalogs.7 The name, Department of Elementary and Early Childhood, was first listed in 1974.
