Appearing as the Student Counseling Bureau in May 1949, this unit assisted students with educational, vocational, and personal problems.¹ By 1956 its name appeared as the Student Counseling Service.² In 1970 the Board of Trustees changed the name of the Student Counseling Service to the Psychological and Counseling Center, to reflect more clearly the nature of services available there.³ By 1989 it was listed as the Counseling Center, and with vocational, academic, personal, and interpersonal problems; its services included workshops, classes, individual, couple, and group counseling, as well as consultative services to University staff and departments.⁴
