Color and black and white 2 inch University videotapes of television programs relating to the University of Illinois concerning College Bowl (1960), Krannert Center for the Performing Arts (ca. 1965), Illinois Summer Youth Music (1968), University Christmas shows (1970-79), and John E. Corbally's Addresses on the state of the University (1971-77). U-Matic videotapes include performances of Christmas shows from 1976-1981 and Annual Reports on video from 1981-1985 hosted by President Stanley Ikenberry, plus Ikenberry's speech to the University of Illinois Foundation's 47th Annual Meeting in 1982.
The series also includes 3/4" and 1/2" videotapes, and DVDs of events including Shozo Sato's Kabuki and other theatrical productions (1974-81), an instructional Psychology tape entitled "Social Attitudes and Prejudices" (1972), and other University events (1932-94), WILL interview of President B. Joseph White (2005), and tapes copied from archives' films and stills.
Public Affairs videos are also included such as Illinois Newsreels (1997), Welcome to the Class of 2000 (1996), University of Illinois Halftime Spots (1997)and other filmed sports events, Informational and Public Service Announcements (1994-1997) concerning the U of I, television news coverage of visits by Vice-President Al Gore (1997) and President Clinton (1998), memorial service for terrorism of September 11, 2001, Cross-Campus Initiatives, Convocation address by Bill Geist (2000), various stock footage of campus, Nobel Prizes (2003), and Illini Spirit Admissions video (1986).
Born Digital Records of Public Affairs include video and transcripts of final and rough versions of public affairs videos and short clips of video projects. Important topics include the Crisis Nursery, Ebertfest, Virginial Theater, Illinois Marathon, Alma Restoration, Lincoln Hall Restoration, Engineering Open House, Convocation, student life, and campus b-roll. Also included is a recording of President Barack Obama's speech given at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

In 1919, a special committee of the Board of Trustees "recommended establishing a 'Bureau of Publicity' whose duties would be along 'University publicity and propaganda lines'1. On August 15, 1919 the Board of Trustees appointed Joseph F. Wright as Director of Publicity, effective September 1, 19202. On July 25, 1956 the Board of Trustees approved a change of title to Director of Public Information3.The Office of Public Information is charged with the responsibility "for interpreting the University to the public" and with "the task of collecting University news and making it available to the communications media"4. The Director of Public Information advises the President on University matters "in which the public is interested" and assists "in interpreting University policies and activities" through the media5.
In September 1967, the Director became University Director of Public Information and Assistant to the President for institutional relations and development6. On January 17, 1980 the Board of Trustees authorized the position of Special Assistant to the President and university director of public information and communication activities7.
