University of Illinois Residence Life Subject Files, including annual reports prepared by residence life staff, staff application and evaluation materials, residence hall room rosters, residence hall rules and policies, procedure manuals, hall council meeting minutes, hall constitutions and governmental regulations, operational calendars, staff videos, hall programming boards reports and activities, information on African-American residents and residence hall organizations, and resident advisors' evaluations (restricted).  Also includes scrapbooks and photographs of university residence halls and housing services (c. 1950s-1980s), photographs and negatives of residence hall group activities (c. 1980s and c. 1997), photographs of the namesakes of University residence halls,  photographs and captions used in an exhibit of residence halls history (not dated), residence halls welcome posters (c. 1990s), and a banner and display used by University of Illinois students during the 1997 meeting of the Illinois Residence Hall Association.

Biographical Note

In 1939, the Board of Trustees established a Division of Student Housing.1 The director had general supervision of all student housing, advised fraternities and sororities on building plans, cooperated with Physical Plant Department "in its supervision of off-campus personal conduct of students," and acted as agent of the Student Officers Committee and secretary of the Student Discipline Committee.2 The Housing Division operates and maintains all University-owned residence halls and housing facilities. It is responsible to the Vice-Chancellor for Campus Affairs for the inspection of certified student living quarters, for listing available off-campus housing, and for promoting safety, health, and good living conditions.
