Historical Note:

Larry Polansky (1954-2024) was a composer, music theorist, and professor. Born in 1954, Polansky grew up in New York. He began performing guitar at age 10. First enrolling at the New College in Sarasota, Florida, he transferred to UC Santa Cruz, where he would earn a dual degree in math and music in 1977.

Alongside Kenneth Gaburo, Polansky was a founding member and co-director of Frog Peak Music, a publishing company that specialized in experimental scores. He joined the music department at UC Santa Cruz in 2013. During his time at UC Santa Cruz, he curated several shows of "Eye Music: A Festival of American Sign Language Poetry," drawing upon nearly 20 years of study of American Sign Language. Together with his partner, Amy Beal, he brought the Other Minds Archives to UC Santa Cruz. Polansky retired in 2019 and passed away on May 9, 2024.
