Historical Note: Robert "Bob" Eugene Cowan (1932-2014) was an alumnus of the University of Illinois. He was born on December 2, 1932 in Milford, Illinois to parents James and Opal Cowan. Cowan graduated from Milford High School in 1950. He attended the University of Illinois, studying ceramic engineering. During his undergraduate years, he served as the vice president of the American Ceramic Society, was the president of Keramus, sang in the Concert Choir, and played in both the Football Band and Second Regimental Band. He graduated with his bachelors degree in 1954 and went on to earn a masters degree in engineering. Following his graudation, he worked at Westinghouse in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1957, he began a lifelong career at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. He was active with the New Mexico Search and Rescue organization as well as the Los Alamos Amateur Radio Club W5PDO. Cowan died in Los Alamos, New Mexico on January 29, 2014.
