On July 20, 1960, responsibility for inspection of food service operations, water supply, swimming pools, air pollution, production of dairy products, sewers and sewage, review of building plans, and limited inspection of off-campus food service areas was allocated to the Health Service.1 In 1963, a sanitary engineer was appointed and equipment was acquired for noise survey, sound analysis, gas and testing and water analysis.2 The environmental health laboratory was established on the third floor of McKinley Hospital in 1964 and responsibilities were divided between the Sanitary Engineer for water supply,a air pollution, waste disposal, swimming pools and building plans; and the Sanitarian for inspection of food production and food vending facilities on and off campus.3 In 1966 the microbiology laboratory was installed at McKinley Hospital and clinical microbiology was transferred from the Health Center Laboratory to the facility.4 A decontamination center for handling patients involved in accidents where they were exposed to radioactive substances was completed in 1967.5 In 1969 a program of Ambulance Inspection Service was undertaken by the division.6 On February 1, 1973 the division ceased to exist as it was consolidated with the Safety Coordinator's Office and the Health Physics Office to become the Division of Environmental Health and Safety reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Administrative Affairs.7 See Record Group 24/1.
