Historical Note: Edward M. Wickes was a Tin Pan Alley lyricist and author. He was known for his lyrics to the 1901 composition "He Laid Away a Suit of Gray, to Wear the Union Blue," which was composed by Ben Jansen. He also wrote the 1916 book Writing the Popular Song, which was introduced by Harry von Tilzer. Later in life he worked as a music critic and writer for the New York Enquirer, originating a column on music-publishing.
