Correspondence relating to applications for teaching and research positions in the Department of Geology, including letters of inquiry, application forms, reprints of publications, and letters of recommendation. The series covers applications for full-time positions (1936-70); applications for graduate assistantships and fellowships (1967-68); and applications for post-doctoral fellowships, (1965-70). Principal correspondents are heads of the department: Frank W. DeWolf (1936-46), Harold R. Wanless (1946-47), George W. White (1947-65), Carleton A. Chapman (1965-66), and Fred A. Donath (1967-70).
The Geology Department has offered courses under the Department of Natural History (1868);1 College of Natural History (1870);2 College of Natural Science (1871-90);3 College of Science, School of Natural History (1891-1912)4 and College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (1913- ).5 In November 1919, the Geology Department was organized on a committee basis.6 During this period, the Geology and Geography Department was organized, but the Geography Department became separate in 1947.7 The Department offers both undergraduate and graduate courses.
