Historical Note: Dean Wallace Sanders (1929-2020) was born in Seward, Nebraska to Will Earl and Fannie Harriet Sanders. At age 15 he began performing piano. In 1947 he attended Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas as a performance major. In 1950 he transferred to the Chicago Musical College to study with Rudolph Ganz and received his bachelors in performance in 1951 and masters in 1953. Upon graduation, he became an instructor at Iowa State Teachers College, now the University of Northern Iowa. In 1957 he joined the faculty at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he would remain until his retirement in 1991. During this time he won seven international competitions and served as a guest soloist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Sanders died in Urbana, Illinois.
