Historical Note: The First Hawaiian Conservatory of Music was founded by Oscar Schmidt in 1919 as a mail order curriculum for learning the Hawaiian guitar. Schmidt advertised the school in Popular Mechanics Magazine as well as other smaller magazines. The company was initially founded in Philadelphia but in 1922 began operating out of New York's Woolworth Building.
