Interior of the Airplanes Laboratory | University of Illinois Archives
View of several biplanes inside the Gym Annex on Springfield Avenue during World War I's School of Military Aeronautics.
The caption on the opposite page reads, "This building, as has been noted, was formerly an Armory, and as such was provided with a large area of clear floor space and with an excellent skylight lighting. This photograph, taken some months ago, shows the space available for Airplane work and gives some idea as to the number of planes that may be used. Examination of the picture shows the small groups of men in Alignment and Assembly work. At the present time some of the balcony space is in use as the Wire Laboratory necessary in connection with the work of Repair".
