Scope and Contents of the Materials

Papers of Lee A. Rubel (1928-95), professor of Mathematics (1958-93), contains correspondence, biographical information, course materials, lecture notes, publications, unpublished manuscripts, research notebooks, pocket calendars, grant proposals, and correspondence concerning the mathematics department, sabbaticals, grades, and mathematics research and instruction relating to complex variables, number theory, harmonic and functional analysis, logic and topology, algebraic differential equations, and analog computer design. Principal correspondents include Paul T. Bateman, C. Ward Henson, Leonard Lipshitz, Walter Rudin, Michael Singer, B.A. Taylor, Richard M. Timoney, and Lawrence Zalcam and personnel of the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, American Mathematical Society, National Science Foundation, National Security Agency, and the Center for Advanced Study.

In March 2019, new materials were added and organized into three series. The first series contains diaries, notebooks, Rubel's short stories and poems, drawings, math notes and equations, photographs, professional and personal correspondence. Of special interest are correspondence from U.S. representative Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr. and letters from Rubel to Harold Brodkey. The second series contains material related to Nina Rubel's projected to created a CD of Professor Rubel's collected work, as well as material related to Professor Rubel's memorial service. The third series consists of a selection of publications from 1957 to 1999, including posthumously published articles.

Biographical Note

Lee Albert Rubel was born in 1928 in New York City and graduated from the Bronx High School of Science in 1947. He received a B.S. (Cum Laude) in mathematics in 1950 from the City College of New York (now the City University of New York) and a Ph.D.  in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin in 1954. After holding teaching and research positions at Cornell and the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, Professor Rubel became assistant professor of mathematics at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 1958, associate professor in 1960, and full professor in 1965. Professor Rubel held numerous teaching and research positions during his career including positions at Columbia University, the Institut des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques in Paris, Purdue University, and McGill University. Professor Rubel's research focused on analog computing and meromorphic functions, subjects on which he published widely in the leading journals of his field. He retired from the University of Illinois in 1993 and passed away in March 1995.
