Consists of photographs, phonographic sound recordings, one newspaper clipping, two concert programs, photocopies of yearbook pages, and a band uniform, documenting LaVoy Schneider's participation as a student in the University of Illinois Marching Band between 1942 and 1949.
LaVoy "Sonnie/Sonny" Hensel Schneider (1923-1992) was born on July 13, 1923 in West Chicago. The son of August William Schneider and Dorothea Friedericka Henrietta Augusta Hensel, he grew up in Chicago. Schneider began his studies as a Ceramic Engineering major at the University of Illinois in 1941. In 1942, he registered for military service and fought in WWII. Upon his return, he married Dorothy Katherine Berngen on July 21, 1945 in Park Ridge, Illinois. Schneider graduated from the University of Illinois in 1949, and was a member of the University of Illinois Marching Band throughout his four years of his study. He was also a member of the Concert Band his last two years at the University of Illinois. During his tenure with the Band, he played tenor saxophone and bass clarinet. Schneider graduated from the University of Illinois in 1949 and after a productive career died in Nashville, TN on February 17, 1992.
