The recordings are arranged alphabetically by title within each grouping. The films are arranged numerically by film number.

Series 2 contains historical music instruments and ephemera used by musicians during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, including two clarinets used by A. Smith while a member of the John Philip Sousa Band in 1900.

Series 3 contains manuscript music, published sheet music, concert programs, newspaper/magazine clippings, personal papers, and photographs. The manuscript music and published music are arranged separately, alphabetically by composer. In addition there are commercially produced films, manuscript music, published sheet music, concert programs, newspaper/magazine clippings, photographs, and musical instruments, all of which document American music and culture. Of particular interest are early recordings of the John Philip Sousa band; correspondence and manuscripts created by Harry Partch; records of performances by John Cage at the University of Illinois, including HPSCHD and Music Circus; the scrapbook of Estelle Liebling, a soprano that toured with the Sousa Band; records of Farm Aid; Eddie Alkire method books; and ASEA photographs featuring Ali Akbar Khan.

Collection Historical Note

Since 1998, the Musical Americana Collection has served as an umbrella collection for small donations received by the Sousa Archives from a variety of donors and sources. Documenting the breadth of music in America, the collection contains a variety of historic recordings, music instruments, personal papers, concert ephemera, photographs, personal papers, and music business records. The collection began with a series of sound recordings, which were initially acquired by Mark Hindsley and Harry Begian during their tenures as directors of the University of Illinois bands. These items formed the basis of the collection in early 2005. In March 2005, the Sousa Archives added its first music instruments to the collection, establishing a second series to encompass small donations. In April 2005, films on a variety of subjects were transferred from the School of Music to the Sousa Archives. Small sheet music collections were first donated by the School of Music in 1998 and then again in May 2005; these items formed the third series of the collection. Since 2005, all small collections have been added to this collection. Digitized and Digitally born small collections were added in 2025.

Biographical Note

Established in 1994 as the Sousa Archives for Band Research (SABR) and renamed the Sousa Archives and Center for American Music (SACAM) in January 2004.  The Center's mission supports and facilitates research, education, and public engagement by preserving and providing access to the documentary evidence of this country's music and fine arts heritage.

The Sousa Archives began with John Philip Sousa's donation of his band library to the University Bands in 1933. From 1933 to 1994, the Sousa Band Library was referred to as the Sousa Library and Museum, and was managed by the University Bands. In 1994, the management and care of the paper records was transferred to the University Library and the museum became the Sousa Archives for Band Research. Managed by Phyllis Danner, the archives' collection management policy was limited to wind band records. In 2003 the responsibility for the preservation of the music instruments and artifacts was fully transferred to the University Library. In 2004, Scott Schwartz became the director and change the name to the Sousa Archives and Center for American Music. In that same year, the Center received a congressional proclaimation, declairing that the month of November would be designated as American Music Month. Since then, SACAM has celebrated this event with an annual exhibition, featuring objects and paper records from within the Center's holdings.

Since 2007, the Sousa Archives has participated in and hosted concerts during local festivals including: Granny's Porch, the Urbana Sweetcorn Festival, the CU Folk and Roots Festival, the Boneyard Arts Festival, and the Uniting Pride Fest. Beginning in 2013, the Archives began a local music initiative, collecting oral history interviews and records from local musicians, record producers, and concert organizers.

The Sousa Archives has also contributed to national developments in archival collection management systems, assisting in the development of both Archon and Archives Space.
