Roger Koenker (1947- ) was Professor of Economics and Statistics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1983-2017). Born February 21, 1947 in North Dakota, Roger Koenker received his undergraduate degree from Grinnell College in 1969 and obtained his PhD in Economics from the University of Michigan in 1974. He then worked as assistant professor of Economics at the University of Illinois from 1974-1976 and then became a member of the Technical Staff, Economics Research, at Bell Telephone Laboratories from 1976-1983. In 1982 Professor Koenker was a visiting associate professor of Economics at the University of Pennsylvania and then returned to the University of Illinois in 1983 as a professor of Economics (1983-2017); he later also became a professor of Statistics at the University of Illinois (1997-2017). As of 2018 Professor Koenker is an Honorary Professor of Economics at the University of College London.
Professor Koenker specializes in statistics and econometrics and applications and is best known for his work on quantile regression and the regression analysis tool he developed, which is widely used across many disciplines. He is a Fellow of the Econometric Society, Fellow of the American Statistical Society, Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and recipient of the 2010 Emanuel and Carson Prize for Statistical Innovation. While at the University of Illinois, he repeatedly received the Outstanding Teaching Award. At the University of Illinois he was also honored as the William B. McKinley Professor of Economics and Public Utilities by the College of Commerce and Business Administration in 1997. Professor Koenker served as the Associate Editor for the Journal of American Statistical Association (2004-2014), the Journal of Statistical Software (2002-2016), Econometric Theory (1994-), and of Econometrica (1991-1994). He has received grants from National Science Foundation (NSF) and NATO Cooperative Research Grants. Professor Koenker has published, co-authored, and co-edited numerous articles and books (Quantile Regression 2005, Economic Applications of Quantile Regression 2005, and the Handbook of Quantile Regression 2017). As of 2018, Professor Koenker is Honorary Professor of Economics at the University of College London.
