Frank John Roos, Jr. (1903-1967) was born on January 10, 1903 in Chicago. The son of Frank John Sr. and Mary Ellen Roos, he received a bachelors of philosophy from the University of Chicago in 1927. From 1927 to 1928, he was a Carnegie Fellow at Harvard University. In 1937, he received a PhD in art history from Ohio State University, writing a dissertation entitled, "An Investigation of the Sources of Early Architectural Design in Ohio." Two years later, he married Beatrice Adams. From 1928 until 1936 he served on the faculty of Ohio University and from 1936 to 1946 he served on faculty at Ohio State University. Roos published The Illustrated Handbook of Art History in 1937. In 1946 he joined the faculty of the Art Department at the University of Illinois, serving as the Department head from 1946 to 1948. The following year, he began planning the University of Illinois' first Festival of Contemporary Arts. Roos was instrumental in establishing the first permanent art collection at the University, a collection that eventually became part of the Krannert Art Museum. Roos died suddenly in his Champaign home on February 2, 1967.
