Newcomb (1886-1968), Professor of Architecture (1918-54) and Dean of the College of Fine & Applied Arts (1932-54), including correspondence (1908-57) scrapbooks with clippings relating to his life and work (1918-45); travel notes with observations on American & World Architecture (1921, 1929, 1946); publications on missions the history of architecture, color, tiles, ceramics, and architects, (1916-51); Manuscripts of his articles and speeches on art appreciation, rural architecture, city planning, the University of Illinois, and the Grand-Neosho River (1916-55); files with articles and information on American architecture and architects, bells, bridges, ceramics, color, Abraham Lincoln in Art, modern architecture, and tiles (1902-57); photographs of churches, homes, and other structures, especially in California, Illinois, Kansas, New Mexico, and China; and files, notebooks, and publication concerning the history of states and the types of architecture they contain (1902-65). The series contains extensive documentation on Franciscan missions in California, the uses of ceramics in architecture, photographs of midwestern architecture and Kansas history.
