Historical Note: Geneva Grosz Belford (1932-2014) was born in Washington D.C. and grew up in Philadelphia. She received her bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania and her PhD from the University of Illinois. Belford's inital research interests were in chemistry and mathematics, however, she later conducted extensive research in computer science. Her tenure at the University of Illinois lasted nearly fifty years, during which time she was a professor of both Mathematics and Computer Science and served as the Associate Dean of the Graduate College. She published extensively both alone and with collaborators, including with her husband, R. Linn Belford.
