Historical Note: Ronald and Barbara Hedlund, married in 1974, are American musicians and educators. Ronald Hedlund, an emeritus faculty member at the University of Illinois School of Music, is the only faculty member to be awarded tenure twice. Professor Hedlund has enjoyed a renowned and diverse career, with repertoire ranging from Handel to Barber. He is a graduate of Hamline University, Indiana University, Akadamie fur Musik und Darstellende Kunst, and the Julliard School American Opera Center. Professor Hedlund has performed in every major opera house in America including Chicago, New York, St. Louis, and Houston. He has also performed abroad, appearing in recitals and festivals in Scotland, Hungary, Mexico, Canada, Italy, and Austria. He has premiered operas by Benjamin Britten, Samuel Barber, and Steven Oliver, among others. In addition to his time at the University of Illinois, Professor Hedlund has taught at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, the Aspen Vocal Institute, and Eastern Illinois University . Even though he has enjoyed a world-renowned career, he has been and continues to be very active in the Champaign-Urbana local music and arts community.
