The Board of Trustees established in April 1985 the Statistics Department, a Division in the Department of Mathematics, to provide a clear focus and visibility for statistics as a separate discipline.1
Goals for growth and development included increasing graduate enrollment, and developing cross-disciplinary programs and research in the field. The Department is responsible for the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs in statistics, and for teaching statistics to students in other programs.
Other responsibilities entail overseeing the operation of the Mathematical and Statistical Consulting Committee, and continuing research in theoretical and applied statistics.2
The first course offerings appeared in Fall 1984, and as of 1986, thirty courses in statistics were being taught.
