Historical Note: Irene Hope Berkley Mapes-Hay (1902-1984) was an organist and grade school teacher. Born in Ogden, Illinois on September 11, 1902, Mapes-Hay was the daughter of Herbert Kelly and Mary Elizabeth Duggins Berkley. She married Lester T. Mapes in 1923. After her husband's death in 1973, she married John Hay in 1980. Mapes-Hay had two children, Mary Ella Roderick and Lester Mapes Jr. In addition to serving as an organist and grade school teacher, Mapes-Hay conducted genealogical research about her family and William Harvey Richardson (1790-1853), who owned an 1812-era clarinet that came to be in her possession. She remained in Ogden until her death on October 16, 1984.
